Utilizing Phone Accessories For Safety and Better Experience

Utilizing Phone Accessories For Safety and Better Experience

Cellular phone service has evolved tremendously over the past 10 years. In 2000 we saw the introduction of what are now called smartphones, merging telephone service with the functions of a PDA (personal digital assistant). There were earlier models leading the way starting as early as 1992, but not to the extent of the 2000 version. Since then, a cellular phone has morphed into more of a pocket PC with a telephone feature than an actual phone.

With the new platforms like iphone and Android, the thing that separates today’s phones from the earlier smartphones in the introduction of apps. Apps are small applications that can run on a smartphone, and are designed to aid in productivity, engagement, entertainment, and organization. Some of the most popular apps keep us connected via Facebook and Twitter, bring streaming music from Pandora, and help pass the time. And if you can think it, well, there’s probably “an app for that”.

I’ll never forget when I discovered how to stream Pandora radio through my mono Bluetooth headset on the Blackberry Curve. I originally thought only stereo headsets could use streaming audio, but for a lot of versions of the Pandora app, it allows use of a mono headset, but the feature was buried in the settings. After I figured that out, I started looking for other ways to get better features from music and productivity tools.

Staying completely connected on the go is a huge part of the smartphone attraction. For many, a lot of their call time is used in the car going from place to place. With mobility, connectivity, and efficiency at such high premiums, there are a few cellular accessories that everyone should have. First, get a hands-free headset. Bluetooth technology has become less and less expensive, and it is worth the $20-$75 to keep you hands free at work and on the road. Plus, some mono Bluetooth headsets can even play music, so check around and see which ones will work for you. Second, get a cellular amplifier. A cellular amplifier can drastically improve cell phone reception in cars and buildings, increasing internet connection speeds, reducing dropped calls, and improving overall call quality. This is another must-have if you experience poor reception at work, in your car, or even at home. Third, get a car adapter kit with a harness for your mobile device (especially for those using iphones or ipods). Car adapter kits are hardwired to your vehicle and give a steady place to mount and charge your phone. They can also integrate into your car’s speaker system, allowing you to stream your Pandora app through your radio, listen to your itunes library in your car, and even take phone calls through your car’s radio.

As with buying a car or a house, or anything really, the options and accessories you have with your smartphone can really improve how much you enjoy using it. Having a Bluetooth headset, cellular amplifiers, and a car adapter kit for your smartphone or ipod make using the devices safer, faster, and more efficient that not having them. Save yourself some time and trouble, and spend a little extra on some good accessories to get more out of your smartphone or other mobile devices.

Integrating Ipods and Iphones Into Your Car Stereo

Integrating Ipods and Iphones Into Your Car Stereo

There are a lot of "simple" solutions for playing your ipod through your car's stereo system, like FM transmitters and cassette adapters, and while these can be quick and easy solutions, the sound quality and functionality of these solutions tends to be less than expected.

How do you get around having to use the cigarette lighter for power and having extra wires hanging out in your car while increasing the sound quality of your ipod? Get a real ipod adapter kit. Ipod adapter kits are the real solution for integrating your ipod into your car's stereo system. These adapters are hardwired into your car's power supply, getting rid of external wires and freeing up the power supply for things like phone chargers or other items.
You also get the sound quality enhancements of having your ipod directly connected with the stereo system reducing annoying static or poor sound quality. FM Modulators can work well, but any competing signals produce static and lower quality sound.

The docking station for an ipod car kit is mounted to the vehicle, and in many cases can acts as a power docking station, charging your ipod while it is in use. Some models also offer external controls you can attach to your steering wheel and have the controls right at your fingertips. Having a secure docking station keeps you hands free and keeps your ipod or iphone in reach.

Music on demand is a lot better than radios or CDs. Keep your music with you on the go by integrating an ipod car kit into your vehicle, and enjoy countless hours of your favorite music through the highest quality sound available. Stream music from you ipod library, online radio stations, sports programs, and other applications such as Pandora or internet radio. (Be advised – streaming music from the internet may increase internet usage charges based on your cellular data plan.) Professional installation is recommended for most units to ensure proper functioning and to make sure your ipod car kit will last.

Taking the ipod car adapter a step further, it also integrates with the iphone. Using you integrated kit, you can take voice calls, keep up with voice navigation and more through your vehicles speakers. This is truly the best hands free option available since you can stream music, navigation and voice calls without having to hold the phone. You can also charge your iphone while it is plugged into the docking station, extending your talk time.

Ipods and iphones are made for people who want the music and multimedia on the go, and more than half the people who use them claim they are unhappy with how the integrate into their cars. Some newer cars have an auxiliary input which addresses part of the integration issue of getting the sound to the speakers, but it doesn’t address the issue of docking the ipod or iphone, or charging it during use. Ipod and iphone car adapter kits are the way to go for those that are unhappy with their current integration method, so it is time to upgrade to a full integration kit for you car.

Fall and Winter Lawn Maintenance Techniques

Fall and Winter Lawn Maintenance Techniques

A successful (green) lawn usually starts in the fall and winter months, getting ahead of weeds and getting the right mix of nutrients in the soil. Starting in November, reduce your mower height about a half inch to an inch shorter than you normally do. Be sure to bag any clippings to reduce the amount of weed seeds that get left behind. Getting all the thatch picked up will help it stay healthier during the cold winter months. When spring returns, you will be rewarded with less weeds and a healthier lawn right from the start.

A winter fertilizer will put potassium back into the soil, making it more resistant and healthy during the dormant winter months. It is important to get it fertilized before it stops growing in mid to late November, so make this a fall routine. When spring returns, you want to start with a higher nitrogen mix. Aim to do your spring fertilizing in mid to late march or whenever temps return to the mid 60?s. Then follow up with another application every 8 weeks or so (every two months). This will keep the nutrients in the soil, and keep your lawn extra healthy and green. Try to do any weed reducing mixes along with the fall/winter fertilizer or with the first round of fertilizer in the spring.

Over the course of a year, your lawns soil can get packed down pretty good. The more dense the soil is packed, the more difficult it is for water and nutrients to penetrate to the roots. Aerating a lawn is simply using a tool to create small holes in the soil to allow the much needed water and nutrients to get back down to the root systems. Grasses can’t survive long in compacted soil. If you notice your lawns soil becoming compacted, it is time to call someone to aerate. You can tell by taking something like a match or toothpick and pushing it into the soil. If it is difficult to push in, then you have compacted soil and should have it aerated to keep your lawn from thinning out and eventually dying.

Overseeing is an often overlooked maintenance service. It is a good idea to over-seed your lawn at least every couple of years. Your lawn will begin to slow down in its reproduction. Lawns can get thinner over time, and over-seeding will keep new grasses growing which will keep the lawn thicker. A thicker lawn is more tolerant to disease, more weed resistant, and will stay greener longer. If it has been a few years since you have over-seeded your lawn (or if you can’t remember when), then now is a good time to schedule it. The best time to over-seed is in September, so think ahead and remember to get it done this year.

As we mentioned above, the winter fertilizer application should include a weed reducing component. Weeds usually take their toll over the winter months due to leaves blocking sunlight and reduce air flow in the lawn, and from thatch containing weed seeds left to sit and cultivate over the winter months. When the spring time rolls around, this combination can create a free for all for weeds. The process to keep your lawn weed free begins by keeping it thatch free, keeping the leaves cleared, and adding the winterized fertilizing with weed control to your lawn maintenance routines.

Positive Signals In The Real Estate Market

Positive Signals In The Real Estate Market

There hasn’t been much to cheer about regarding real estate over the last several years as home prices have plummeted, foreclosures have skyrocketed, and activity in the market as a whole has been significantly reduced since the housing bubble evaporated. It has been hard on families who have lost jobs and hard form families that rely on real estate as their main source of income.

With all the negative reports, there are stunningly positive trends emerging to focus on. Clark Howard, http://www.clarkhoward.com/mobile/2011-05-16/ (a well known consumer economists), makes several points that should brighten the outlook of the housing market. 1) Home prices are very low, creating a unique opportunity for people in a position to buy a home. The affordability index for homes is at its best level in the 41 year history of the home affordability index. That means that home buyers are getting more house for their money, and better interest rates. 2) Real estate is looking like a great investment again. As with stocks or anything in your investment portfolio, you want to buy low and sell high. There couldn’t be a better time to buy property than right now due to favorable terms and the lower cost of home ownership all around. 3) For those that have dreamed of owning a second home or vacation home, it is a better time to buy now than at any point in our recent history. More house for the money can also mean better locations for the money, and even homes in desirable locations are less expensive today than they have been over the past 10 years.

What actionable advice can you take from this? Well, if you are one of the unfortunate people that encountered a foreclosure or a reduced credit score because of losing income and missing payments, there is still hope for you. There are a lot of properties that have been on the market longer than a year, and often these owners are in need of income themselves. If you can find a house in your price range, you can try a lease-purchase agreement where you lease the home for 1-3 years until your financial and credit situations improve and then you purchase the house. These types of arrangements can work out well for the home owner by increasing their income. It is also favorable for the lessee because they can get into a nicer home at an affordable rate, and still have the option to purchase at a later date.

If you are in a favorable financial position, then credit and cash flow are not your concerns. Buyers in this category can cash in on remarkable deals because some sellers are extremely motivated to sell, there are lots of bank owned properties, and their mortgage interest rates will be very favorable. Care should be taken to guard against the “too good to be true” phenomenon because foreclosures can often have hidden issues from disgruntles previous owners. Be sure to have properties inspected prior to purchasing. Don’t make concessions for the sake of a good deal because those concessions could cost you later.

So, get out and start looking. There are some great deals in real estate right now with favorable financing options. You may find you can find close to your dream house and still stay within budget.

Using Technology To Stimulate Profitability and Growth

Using Technology To Stimulate Profitability and Growth

Your business' daily operations determine how profitable, scalable, and sustainable it is for the long term. Companies in all stages of business from start-ups to established brands all have similar recipes for success - have a great product, efficient operations, and a growing customer base.

The advances in technology make it much easier to hone business operations into a manageable and trackable system. There are software applications specifically engineered to help all types of businesses streamline operation, speed up transaction times, and provide ways for continued contact with the customers. With all the tools and technology available to help businesses grow, many small businesses or self employed business owners are still not adapting to the new technologies.

Steep upfront cost and learning curves are the main reasons we see small businesses fail to adapt new technologies - and too often it is based on assumptions. Business owners may not even look into technologies available because the think they can't afford new software to run their business.
Fortunately, the mindset of software companies has evolved over the years to offer small or no up-front fees and a monthly fee for the software. With a monthly fee pricing structure (often referred to as SAS or software as a service), businesses can use the software to improve their business operations and increase their profitability by saving time, keeping track and taking payments, improving communication with customers, increasing data security, and increasing conversions by simplifying the transaction/registration process.

When looking for business software, there are a few things we realized that were important to finding the right provider. First, have a clear understanding of what you need. Most small businesses have similar needs, but each is different. What would make your business run smoother? It may be online recurring payments, customer management, e-commerce components, or online registration. Second, clearly define what you want your role to be. You got into business to make money doing something you enjoy and are good at - so spend more time doing that and less time on the administration of the business. The right business tools and software can allow you to do just that. Third, start investing time in things that are important. So many tasks that occupy our time and attention are things we consider to be urgent and pressing. Defining what is urgent and what is important will help you decide where to best spend your energy and resources. A small business owner has to wear a lot of different hats and take on a lot of different roles. As the business owner, you ultimately decide how those roles are handled. Don't neglect the important things such as attention to customers, marketing, or staying aligned with the companies vision and core values because of the minutia of the day to day operations. Our best advice to small business owners is this - every business function can be optimized if you use the right business tools, so find the tools that work for you, and get back to doing the things that you enjoy. You and your customers will notice.

Top 5 Reasons Your Business Should Invest In Technology

Top 5 Reasons Your Business Should Invest In Technology

2010 was the year of the entrepreneur. Over the 12 month period in 2010, the number of people starting businesses was at its highest point in 14 years, dating back to 1996. Entrepreneurship tends to follow the economic cycle, with periods of boom promoting new businesses aided by easier financing and expendable income, and periods of bust with businesses growing out of the need to get to work. In 2010, the job market was still very week after a prolonged period of high unemployment. The numbers indicate that when people can't find work, they can try and create it by starting their own businesses.

Starting a business is difficult. The business owner often has to be the expert at everything from operations to accounting and management. It is very difficult to do all the jobs of a business owner well, so how can a young business grow and thrive with the economy against it and owners that are spread thin?

The answer is simple. As a business owner, it is important to look for ways to do your job increasingly efficient and effective. The best way to improve both efficiency and effectiveness is to put systems in place to automate where possible and create fluidity where there are bottlenecks. Here are the top 5 things having the right technology can do for a small business.

1) Technology can improve revenue stability by setting up auto billing and tracking receivable. Revenue and cash flow are the life blood of a small business, so you need to be aware and on top of every dollar that is owed to the business. Having a smart accounting system that can auto bill your recurring customers and track money owed can keep your cash flow at optimum levels.

2) Technology can reduce stress. Having a system to easily keep up with core business metrics can give you the quick snapshots of your business's health. Surprises can really hurt an owners moral and increase stress levels, but if you are being informed daily of critical metrics, you can reduce the chances of being surprised in your business - because usually those surprises are not pleasant ones at all.

3) Technology can put the "Aces in their Places". It has been said a lot to improve efficiency, but this old saying is still true. As a business owner, you probably started a business doing something you loved and were good at. You didn't start a business to be an accountant or a data entry person. With the right technology, you can streamline business tasks and get back to doing what you started the business to do - execute your product or service.

4) Technology can increase revenues. When your business becomes more efficient, you can increase volume and still maintain a good level of operational execution. Increasing volumes adds money to the bottom line. Energy that would be spent on manual business administrative tasks can now be used to provide your services or sell more products.

5) Technology can save you time and money. There is always a cost associated with business technology, but in many cases the cost can be quickly absorbed due to all the positive implications that it can provide. Business technology can save money by decreasing downtime, improving efficiency, and reducing human resources put into manual administrative tasks. All of these time savers work closely to put more money and time in your pocket.

Do You Run Your Business Or Does It Run You? A look At Gymnastics Studios

Being a business owner is no small task. It is the proverbial marathon of balancing personal time and professional duties. Balancing all these roles is a difficult and daunting task, even for the brightest of leaders. As the business owner, it is your responsibility to run the business – not to let it run you.

The Dos and Dont’s of Job Searching

The Dos and Dont’s of Job Searching

When it comes to landing a job, understanding the hiring process can put potential candidates in a great position to win employment. Several factors influence the hiring decision, and knowing how to strategically position yourself might make all the difference. Employers are looking for 1) a qualified candidate that 2) fits the culture of the company and 3) has experience or traits that point to being able to perform the job. Nailing all three will move you right to the top of the resume pile.

First, apply for jobs that you are qualified for, and maybe even a little under qualified for. The mistake a lot of job seekers can run into is trying to fill positions they are over qualified for, especially in a down economy. There are more people seeking the same jobs, driving up job competition. Hiring managers are still less likely to hire over qualified individuals in fears they will grow tired of a job or under appreciate it over time. Over qualified individuals may even continue their jobs search after winning a job because they took something that was a step backwards, and employers recognize this. It is better to look to utilize experience and go for positions that are a lateral move, or even a move up. Hiring managers often hire people looking to move up into a position because they can cost less in salary, have more drive, and be more appreciative for the opportunity – all of which are wins for the company if the applicant can perform the job.

Second, do your research. Find out a little about the company, leadership, and employee programs. Often times, leadership personalities and employee programs give valuable insight into the culture of the company. Take notice of work attire, interaction, and how recognition is given (and when it is given). Many companies today strive for a family environment, and “adopting” a new employee can have a major impact on that culture. A great way to do research on a company’s culture is following them on social media or connecting with future coworkers on LinkedIn.com. Making these connections isn’t presumptuous in today’s connected environment, but rather can show your interest in the company and the people you could be working with.

Third, use your resume or phone interviews to only focus on relevant education and experience. You have a limited amount of time to capture attention. Use bullets on your resume to showcase your skills, but don’t just use one resume. Each job worth winning is worth the extra time to customize your resume to it specifically. Your entire work history isn’t that important, but what is important are the steps you took to acquire the skills needed to perform the job you are applying for. Be specific and don’t exaggerate, but if you made valuable contributions to other companies, be sure to take full credit for your work and prove you are able to provide value to the new position as you have other positions in the past.

Put yourself in the employer’s position and think about what they want from their next employee. Invest time in customizing your resume, getting to know the potential employers, and build a relationship with the company by networking and getting connected with people. Don’t be afraid to reach a little, and follow up any correspondence with a reciprocal “thank you”. Doing these little things can put you in the running for winning your next job.

Job Vacancies Up, Job Markets Still Sluggish

Job Vacancies Up, Job Markets Still Sluggish

The job market has been stagnant or only slowly recovering over the past 12-24 months. Unemployment is still hovering close to 10%, and there is still a huge strain on the housing market with job loss being a leading factor.

Is there any relief in sight? Maybe. Research conducted by The Conference Board suggest that there are close to 4.5 million job vacancies online, with an increase of over half a million jobs this year and close to 150,000 new jobs posted in May alone.

The job opportunities do seem to be unbalanced though. Some industry segments are seeing rapid growth while others are still declining. The good news taken from looking at the whole spectrum is that jobs are coming available – but the bad news is that those jobs might not be a great fit for a significant number of applicants.

Several industry segments have seen significant growth such as technology, healthcare, environmental, industrial hygiene, and safety jobs. These segments have seen an increase in the number of job openings and postings in recent months. This news comes with pros and cons. Yes, there are more jobs available in these fields, but many of the jobs in these fields require specific technical knowledge and it is often harder to match technical jobs to the right people with the right skill sets. Professionals have advised that technically skilled people search for jobs more on niche based job boards to find jobs within their industry category.

Online job searches are at an all time high, and there is a lot of opportunity there if you can find openings that match your skill set. Job seekers however, sometimes still fail to realize that jobs are won based on several factors including education, experience, fit, and the relationship an applicant has with the employer. Studies show that close to 60% of jobs are won by people that have an inside track (or that know someone internally). When opportunity, skill set, and experience are combined with a professional relationship, there is a much higher probability of getting hired.

As online job searches grow and online jobs postings reach new record levels, it is important to understand how to network and position yourself with the best chance to win a job. More job postings and more job seekers translates into each job having much more competition, so having a relationship with a company’s representatives can go a long way.

It is an encouraging sign to see the number of available jobs growing. This could be an early indicator of job growth improving towards the end of 2011. Job creation continues to stay at the forefront of the political arena as we roll into election year, and hopefully we will see more job-friendly policy emerge, helping fuel and speed up the slow job growth we have seen since the recession officially ended.

US Economists Predict 40% Chance of Double Dip Recession

US Economists Predict 40% Chance of Double Dip Recession

August 2, 2011 will be a day remembered as the day the US almost averted a debt crisis. Congress passed legislation increasing the debt limit to 2.4 trillion dollars (or 24,000 times 1,000,000 for perspective) and agreed to take the next few months and reduce governmental spending. The government simply has to stop spending more than it generates while maintaining the integrity of the services they provide including Social Security and entitlement programs, infrastructure, and national security. And doing so will be no small task.

A double-dip recession is basically the phenomenon of going into a recession, getting out of that recession for a short period of time, and then slipping back into recession. Experts have claimed a 40% chance of going back into a recession, but there is also a 60% chance we will see continued (albeit small) economic growth. The growth we have seen over the past several months has been painfully slow, but still producing small economic gains. Going back into a recession would mean losing any ground that has been made up over the past several months.

The debt crisis puts additional strain on job markets, stock markets, and the entire financial institution. If the government’s credit rating were downgraded, it could cause interest rates to climb making getting access to capital more difficult and more expensive. This could put a further strain on the job market as companies pull back from being able to expand and reinvest in job-creating initiatives.

Along the same timeline, the US jobs market is also in limbo. There is a surprising disconnect between employment and workers. Unemployment rates are creeping upwards again close to 10% while online job postings are again at their highest levels ever. More companies are furloughing employees and starting layoffs again, and the future just doesn’t seem very bright for the foreseeable future if you just look at the numbers. Between the lines though, there is room for optimism.

What is the average person to do about this? Get online and search for jobs. There are still companies and industries hiring talented people, and you have to get out there and find them. You may not be the best “fit” but if you don’t apply for jobs, you have no chance to win a job. Jobs are more competitive, so you have to market yourself the right way through your resume, phone interviews, and personal contacts. Build the relationship before and during the job vetting process, and you might be surprised to find yourself at the top of the list.

Recessions are felt from the top to the bottom of the economy. Prices tend to be higher, incomes become more stagnant, and opportunities decrease out of fear and negative expectations. Over the past 2 years, consumers have gotten smarter and more price conscious while working to reduce personal debt and lighted the expenses load. For those that follow the pattern of learning from this period of recession, the chances of being negatively affected over the long term are significantly reduced. If you need a job, don’t get discouraged to the point that you stop your search. Jobs are out there, you just have to look in the right places.
